How to prepare Tamil Festival Sweet Recipe Sakkarai Pongal or Sweet Pongal

Sakkarai Pongal is a traditional sweet dish that is prepared in Tamilnadu during any festival or important occasion. It is one of the important sweet dish prepared during the celebration of pongal festival. Sakkarai pongal is liked by all for its sweet jaggery taste. Below you can find the preparation of Sakkarai Pongal in a simple manner with the readily available ingredients.


Ingredients to prepare Sakkarai Pongal


Raw rice - 1 cup
Moong dal/ Paasi paruppu - ¼ cup
Ghee - 8 tablespoon
Milk - 1 cup
Cashewnuts - 6 to 8 nos.
Jaggery - 2 to 2 ½ cups
Elachi - 3 nos.
Pachai karpooram(optional) - A small pinch
Water - 3 to 3 1/2 cups

How to prepare tamil festival recipe Sakkarai Pongal



1. Wash the rice in water and keep the rice soaked in water for half an hour.

2. Place cooker on the stove, heat it and add ghee and moong dal. Fry the dal for a minute.

3. Add soaked rice to the fried moong dal. Add 1/2 cup of milk and pressure cook in medium flame till you get 3 whistles.

4. Open the cooker after few minutes and add the other half cup of milk and mix the ingredients. Pongal is ready

5. Take jaggery and make it into fine powder. Put the powdered jaggery in a vessel, add little water and boil for few minutes.

6. Filter the jaggery to remove impurities and add filtered jaggery syrup to the pongal.

7. Keep them on a stove in low flame for few minutes.

8. Add ghee little by little to the pongal and stir well.

9. Switch off the flame when the pongal does not stick to the cooker.

10. Add little ghee to a frying pan and fry cashews, powdered elachi and pachai karpooram.

11. Add this to the sweet pongal and mix well. 

12. Hot Sakkarai Pongal is ready to serve.
